Region in Focus – Development of educational modules for the metropolitan region Rhine-Neckar

Learning about the region, learning within the region and learning with the region – these are the central goals of the learning platform “Region in Focus”. The online-based interactive learning modules are based on the five keywords “landscape”, “life”, “space”, “economy” and “region”. Altogether more than 20 topics of the metropolitan area Rhine-Neckar have been generated to these keywords – from geology, famous inventors of this region to the question “What actually is a European metropolitan region?” – and didactically prepared.

Based on a curriculum analysis of the federal states Baden-Wurttemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, the topics were chosen so that they have on the one hand a regional basis and on the other hand are anchored in the curricula. One key aspect is the integration of interactive elements in order to really use the advantages of the medium internet. So next to texts and figures there are also films, animations and tests to assess learning progress.

The development of the learning modules was conducted in agreement between the Department of Geography at the Heidelberg University of Education, the Association Rhine-Neckar and the Metropolitan Region Rhine-Neckar GmbH.

Since the school year 2012/2013 the learning platform “Region in Focus” used in schools of the metropolitan region. In this context, already several professional development courses for teachers have been conducted at the Heidelberg University of Education.
