TRANSFER TOGETHER: Climate Change Education (CCE)

"CCE4trainees"

Prof. Dr. Alexander Siegmund

A wide range of areas are affected by the consequences of climate change – agriculture, forestry, urban as well as environmental planning and, not least, commercial enterprises. In the working area of "Climate Change Education", innovative learning settings on regional consequences of climate change are developed, evaluated and disseminated for different target groups. The Department of Geography - Research Group for Earth Observation (rgeo) actively contributes to this development by a series of projects. One of the target groups of these projects are trainees of companies for whom educational concepts are transferred into vocational training. Innovative learning modules are based on a multidimensional methodological-didactic approach focusing on the multiple impacts of climate change. The intention behind this is to improve the awareness of the personal involvement and the specific vulnerability of one's own company, as well as the necessity of sustainable climate adaptation strategies.

Climate change and the accompanying increase of extreme events imply economic risks for companies. Markets, production and distribution can be particularly affected by heavy precipitation, storms or prolonged periods of heat or drought. To maintain the economic success and competitiveness of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, broad implementation of sustainable adaptation strategies regarding regional and company-specific consequences of climate change are required. Within the framework of the Transfer Together subproject "Climate Change Education", the existing innovative learning settings for climate adaptation and sustainable development are therefore refined by means of science-practice interaction. Our ambition is a broad dissemination across companies and industries in the entire Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

The transformation to a sustainable society is indispensable for a future within our planetary boundaries. Educational innovations that contribute to the promotion of systems thinking and problem-solving skills can be the key drivers of this transformation process. Improved networking between universities, municipalities, companies, associations and citizens - according to transdisciplinary research - contributes to innovative solutions. Knowledge sharing includes a constructive discourse on economic, ecological and socio-cultural aspects of sustainability.
